Tonganoxie, KS : Local woman with Tonganoxie ties killed in fatality wreck on U.S. 24-40 on Monday, 26th September 2016

A head-on fatality accident Monday night claimed the life of a local woman with Tonganoxie ties.

The accident occurred about 5:20 p.m. Monday on U.S. Highway 24-40 about 0.2 of a mile south of 243rd Street and 5 miles south of Tonganoxie.

According to Kansas Highway Patrol reports, Austin Michael Rose, 32, Eudora, was driving a 2002 GMC Sierra 2500 truck north on U.S. 24-40 when his vehicle crossed the double line and struck a 2009 Chevrolet Equinox driven by Kelly Fowler, 51, Lawrence, head on. Both vehicles came to rest on the right side of the road, according to KHP.

Fowler, who was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Passengers Regan Fowler, 16, and Ariyah Salleck, 1, both of Lawrence, possibly were injured, but KHP reports did not show them being taken to area hospitals.

Rose was injured in the accident and taken to University of Kansas Hospital.

Everyone involved in the accident was wearing safety restraints.

Kelly Fowler had worked for the U.S. Postal Service for several years. Several people mentioned her in Facebook statuses or wrote on her page sharing memories of working with her at the Tonganoxie Post Office or of their friendships.

On Fowler’s Facebook page, she is listed as living in Eudora and being from Tonganoxie. She worked several years for the U.S. Postal Service, serving at both the former location in downtown Tonganoxie and at the current site on Laming Road near U.S. 24-40 on the east side of Tonganoxie.

Accident on K-32

Another accident took place earlier this month in southern Leavenworth County.

About 11:15 a.m. Sept. 13, roughly 4 miles east of Lawrence, Carl M. Baise, 83, Eudora, was driving a 2010 Ford SUV north on County Road 1 when a 2004 Chrysler van driven by Terri E. Trowbridge, 36, Linwood, was headed east on Kansas Highway 32. Baise failed to yield at the stop sign at CR-1 and K-32 and his SUV struck Trowbridge’s van at the intersection.

Trowbridge was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital with injuries, while Baise was not hurt in the wreck. Both were wearing seat belts.
