Boston,MA : Man sentenced in fatal tunnel crash on January, Monday 5th 2018
A 25-year-old Brighton man will spend up to eight years behind bars for a drunken driving crash in the Sumner Tunnel that killed a friend and left another with serious head injuries.
Suffolk Superior Court Judge Linda Giles sentenced Craig Lawlor to five to six years in state prison, followed by two-and-a-half years in the Suffolk County House of Correction. Lawlor was convicted last month of motor-vehicle homicide by operating under the influence of alcohol, operating under the influence of alcohol causing serious bodily injury and manslaughter by motor vehicle. He may be eligible to be released from the jail sentence after six months if he can remain drug- and alcohol-free.
Dillon Cohen, 24, of Salem, N.H., Lawlor’s longtime friend, was killed in the August 2016 crash.
In a victim impact statement, Fred Carter Sr., Cohen’s grandfather, said his life “truly mattered.”
“Dillon rewarded the people around him with a big personality and an even bigger heart,” he wrote. “He was the type of person that would drive all the way to Rhode Island on Christmas Eve to pick up a gift for his boss’s child. Some people are simply wired to leave a mark on this world and everyone they touch.”
Cohen’s twin sister, Dakota Cohen, said her brother was taken “far too soon.”
“After finding out I would never be able to see my brother ever again, the pain hit deeper and deeper as more and more detail of his tragic death came to the surface,” she wrote. “Planning your twin brother’s funeral and signing his death certificate at 24 years old is not something I ever imagined doing.”
Cohen, Stephen Day and Lawlor went bar-hopping in August 2016. Cohen and Lawlor started drinking at 8 p.m. in Salem, N.H., then met Day in Boston about 11 p.m. and drank until 2 a.m., posting videos to Snapchat showing them drinking heavily. Security camera footage from one of the bars shows Lawlor showing signs of intoxication, state police said.
