Fredericksburg, VA : Man dies in Stafford car crash early Thursday morning, February 23, 2017

A 23-year-old man died in a single-vehicle crash on Poplar Road in Stafford County early Thursday morning.

According to a Stafford Sheriff’s Office release, the crash happened at about 2:40 a.m., between Mount Olive Road and Stefaniga Road, about three miles from U.S. 17.

The northbound Hyundai involved in the crash struck two trees and the driver was partially ejected, according to the release.

The cause of the crash is still being investigated, but speed may have played a role in the crash as there was a “large debris field” and the engine was found about 200 feet from the first impact, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The driver died at the scene.

The Sheriff’s Office is not naming the victim until next of kin are notified.
