Plattsmouth, NE : Woman survives overnight crash, trapped in vehicle for hours on Wednesday, November 26, 2014
Laura Hazen, 51, rolled her vehicle Wednesday night and is lucky to be alive Thursday.
Cars move quickly on Highway 75. So fast it’s possible to miss the tire tracks carving through the ditch where hours earlier tall grass concealed a totaled SUV.
“The vehicle exited the roadway on the west side of Highway 75, going down a ditch, eventually rolling over,” Nebraska State Patrol Trooper Eric Aho said.
Aho said he was on a routine patrol when he noticed the scattered dirt, the snapped, broken trees and then heard a woman’s voice.
I drove past the vehicle and noticed the west ditch. I then stopped and I could hear the woman inside yelling for help, Aho said.
Aho said he found what was left of a gold SUV on its top. The back window was busted out and the windshield was smashed in. A woman was inside trying to keep warm in the backseat.
“She was awake and conscious, was breathing. She was complaining of injuries to her ribs. She might have broken her ribs in the collision,” Aho said.
Aho said the driver, Hazen, thinks her SUV rolling into a fence around 8 p.m. Wednesday. He found her at 8 a.m. Thursday. He said that the time frame is unclear, but did say what’s apparent is that she’s lucky to be alive.
Hazen is reportedly in fair condition.
