Richmond, KY : Corbin man dies in single-vehicle I-75 crash on Saturday, December 17th 2016

A Corbin man, Robert Salyers, 36, who was employed by a Richmond automobile dealer, died just before 5 p.m. Saturday after his north-bound 2007 Dodge pickup truck drove off Interstate 75 into a wooded area near mile marker 82 striking several trees.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by Madison County Coroner Jimmy Cornelison.

No other vehicles appeared to be involved in the accident.

According to witnesses, including a retired police officer, Saylers was in the far left lane when his vehicle veered off the pavement and continued forward for some distance with the driver seeming to make no effort to return to the interstate, the coroner said.

The truck then veered farther from the highway, eventually hitting the trees with no apparent effort by the driver to brake or avoid them, Cornelison said.

The extensively damaged vehicle came to rest where it could not be seen from the interstate. If no witnesses had seen what happened, the accident may not have been discovered for some time, the coroner said.

The victim was wearing a seat beat and external injuries did not appear severe enough to have caused his death, according to Cornelison, leading the coroner to suspect Salyers may have suffered a medical emergency that rendered him unable to control his vehicle.

The body was sent to Frankfort for an autopsy, but the coroner did not have results late Monday afternoon.

The results of toxicology tests will not be available for several days, Cornelison added.

Madison County Sheriff’s Deputy Clyne York investigated the accident.

He was assisted at the scene by Madison County EMS, the county fire department and the county rescue squad as well as the coroner.
