Tahlequah, OK : Oklahoma City man killed in Cherokee County motorcycle collision on Friday afternoon, April 1, 2016
An Oklahoma City man was killed Friday afternoon when he lost control of his motorcycle and was struck by a recreational vehicle on a Cherokee County highway.
Fred J. Sumpter, 51, was driving a 2000 Harley Davidson eastbound on U.S. 62, about four miles east of Tahlequah, when he slowed down “for cause,” lost control of the motorcycle and crossed the center lane into oncoming traffic, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol report.
The driver of a westbound 2008 Winnebago recreational vehicle swerved to miss the motorcycle but ultimately struck Sumpter, according to the report.
Sumpter was pronounced dead at the scene from head injuries, and other external and internal injuries. The RV’s occupants — 52-year-old David C. Blankenship and 51-year-old Lori A. Blankenship — were not injured in the collision.
The report cites following too closely as the cause of the collision.
