Three Elk County residents were killed Tuesday evening in Huston Township near the village of Penfield in a fiery crash that left volunteer emergency responders shaken.
The crash occurred on state Route 255 around 5:30 p.m. when a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck driven by William Charles Tyler, 71, of Weedville, for an unknown reason crossed over the center line.
Tyler's truck crashed head-on into a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer driven by Jeffrey Lynn Jacob, 50, of St. Marys. Jacob and his passenger, Ruth B. Buganza, 84, also of St. Marys, became trapped inside the vehicle after it became engulfed in flames after the collision, according to DuBois-based State Police.
Police said Tyler was not wearing a seat belt, and it was unknown if Jacob or Buganza were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
All of the victims involved in the crash were pronounced dead by Clearfield County Deputy Coroner Kim Shaffer-Snyder, said Coroner Mike Morris who assisted at the scene.
Morris said autopsies on the victims were conducted Wednesday, but a final determination of death will not be known until toxicology reports from both drivers are received.
