Summerfield Township, MI : 1 dead, 3 injured in crash on Deerfield Rd. east of Taft Rd. on Saturday, July 9, 2016
A one-vehicle crash about 12:45 a.m. today (July 9) has resulted in the death of a Deerfield man and critical injuries to three others, according to a news release issued by Monroe County Sheriff Dale Malone.
The crash happened on Deerfield Rd. east of Taft Rd., in Summerfield Township.
Stewart H. Etzel, 26, was driving a 2016 Dodge Ra westbound on Deerfield Rd. when he lost control of the vehicle in a curved section of the roadway, according to reports.
After losing control, the vehicle left the roadway to the right, at which time Mr. Etzel over-corrected his steering, causing the vehicle to re-enter the roadway and run off the left side of the road. After leaving the roadway to the left, the vehicle entered the south ditch and overturned. The vehicle continued to overturn until coming to rest, off the south edge of the roadway, west of Taft Road.
There were three passengers in the vehicle including Mr. Etzel's sister Meggan, 21, also of Deerfield.
One of the passengers was ejected from the vehicle during the crash, and was flown to Promedica Toledo hospital by Promedica Air Ambulance, while Miss Etzel and the third passenger were transported to Promedica Toledo Hospital by Monroe Community Ambulance. All three passengers are listed in critical condition.
Mr. Etzel was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Mr. Etzel and his front seat passenger were both wearing their safety belts at the time of the collision.
Speed appears to be a contributing factor in the collision, according to Monroe County Sheriff's Office
Members of the Summerfield Township Volunteer Fire Department, Monroe Community Ambulance, and Promedica Air Ambulance assisted at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office - Traffic Services Division, along with Deputy Sheriff Jay Johnson of the Uniform Services Division.
