Baton Rouge, LA : Police officer injured in wreck on Government Street on Sunday afternoon, May 22, 2016
A Baton Rouge police officer was seriously injured after his motorcycle was struck by a car in the 600 block of Government Street Sunday afternoon.
The police officer was patrolling stalled traffic along Government around 4 p.m. with his lights and sirens switched on when a car turning onto Government from a side street struck the motorcycle the officer was riding, said Sgt. Don Coppola Jr., a Baton Rouge police spokesman.
A passenger in the car was also injured in the crash, Coppola said, and both were taken to a hospital.
Coppola described the officer’s injuries as “moderate to severe” but said the injuries aren’t life-threatening.
The officer was patrolling Government Street checking for wrecks or stalled vehicles in heavy traffic after an event at the River Center, Coppola said.
