A portion of U.S. 27 was closed for three hours Tuesday and three people were taken to the hospital after a crash at Star Lake Drive.
About 11:30 a.m., Hikmat Zaben, 23, of Winter Haven, was driving a 2011 Volkswagen 2.0 south on U.S. 27 when he attempted to make a left turn across the northbound lanes of U.S. 27 at Star Lake Drive, Lake Wales police said.
His vehicle collided with a 2008 Chrysler driven by Kathryn Freeland, 69, of Sebring, in the middle of the intersection, police said. She was driving north on U.S. 27.
Both drivers told police they had a green signal.
Officers watched the signal for several cycles and it appeared to be working properly, police reported.

Freeland was taken by ambulance with injuries to Florida Heartland Hospital in Sebring.
No charges have been filed.
Traffic was rerouted at U.S. 27 and Chalet Suzanne Road during the investigation. The road reopened about 2:30 p.m.
