Ridgefield, N.J : New Windsor trucker rescued after New Jersey Turnpike crash on Tuesday, August 19, 2014
An upstate New York truck driver who fell into a creek after his tractor-trailer crashed through a guardrail and caught fire along the New Jersey Turnpike is hospitalized with severe burns.
Lawrence Scherf, 66, of Vails Gate, New York, was listed in critical condition at St. Barnabas Hospital, state police said.
Trooper Jeff Flynn said Scherf was headed north near where the turnpike meets Interstate 80 when his tractor-trailer crashed and burst into flames.
The cab dangled over the side of the overpass in Ridgefield and the driver fell into the creek below. Three troopers rescued him from the water, Flynn said.
Scherf was airlifted to a hospital and the three troopers were taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons.
The cause of the crash of the truck owned by National Freight Inc., of Indiana, is under investigation.
