LATONIA, KY : Driver arrested after 6-year-old boy struck, killed on bike in NKY on Friday, October 6, 2017
Police are investigating after a 6-year-old boy riding his bike Friday in Latonia, Ky. was struck and killed by a vehicle.
It happened Friday evening at 10 E. 32nd Street, near Decoursey.
Police said the driver of the vehicle, 45-year-old Christoper Wells, left the scene. Officers located him and two occupants at a shopping center south of where the collision occurred.
They are investigating the circumstances that led to the incident, as well as the reason why Wells left the scene.
He was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a fatal traffic collision.
Neighbors said the victim and his two brothers would be out riding their bikes all the time where he was killed. They said he was struck by a truck coming down the one way street.
Christina Bradford, who know the mother of the child, said the street is tough for kids.
"Everyone knows there are kids here playing, but they don't care because they are flying up and down the street... a one way street. They need to fix it... they need to block off the Family Dollar because people fly through the lot and come through because they don't realize there are kids everywhere," she said.
The police said a tragedy like this impacts the entire community.
"Anytime something like this happens it's a huge impact and a tragedy, not only for the family, but the community around. We are doing what we can to call offenders to account in this situation," Lt. Col. Brian Steffen said.
The identity of the boy has not been released.
