Caldwell, NJ : Man killed, 2 other people seriously injured when car hits pole, tree on Mountain Avenue in Caldwell on Monday, Sep 21, 2015

Authorities say a car struck a pole and a tree in northern New Jersey, killing one man and seriously injuring two other people.

Essex County prosecutors say the crash occurred around 11:30 p.m. Monday on Mountain Avenue in Caldwell. The car was southbound when it left the roadway for an unknown reason, and no other vehicles were involved in the accident.

Killed in the crash was Theo Walsh, a 23-year-old East Orange resident who was sitting in the front passenger seat. The driver and another passenger remained hospitalized Tuesday in critical condition, but further details on their injuries were not disclosed.

The two injured people were only identified as college students from Newark. One is 18, while the other is 22.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
