Bedminster , NJ : 2-year-old boy killed and two others injured in crash after his Grandmother lost control of her Nissan Murano and went off the road to the right along Route 287 on Wednesday morning , March 13th 2015
A 2-year-old boy died in the car crash that tied up traffic for much of the day on Route 287 in Bedminster Wednesday.
The boy was pronounced dead at Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center at 9:53 a.m., a little less than an hour after the crash, said Sgt. First Class Gregory Williams, a State Police spokesman.
His grandmother, Keisha Austin, 42, of East Orange had been driving on Route 287 when she lost control of her Nissan Murano and went off the road to the right, Williams said. She overcorrected, re-entering the roadway but leaving it for a second time, and hit a tree, he said.
The collision split Austin vehicle's, which came to rest in the woods, Williams said.
A spare tire from the car came off and struck a second vehicle, a Honda Accord from Pennsylvania, though no one in that car was hurt, Williams said.
Both Austin and her 13-year-old son were taken to Morristown Medical Center by Atlantic Air One, Williams said. Both were listed in critical condition.
The crash remains under investigation, and no charges have been filed, Williams said. He declined to say whether the child who died had been properly secured, citing the ongoing investigation. He also declined to provide the child's name.
Multiple lanes of Route 287 remained closed through the afternoon because of the crash investigation, though they reopened ahead of rush hour.
