Greenwich, NY : Shirley Coon, 81, killed in a car-pedestrian accident on Route 29 in Greenwich on Thursday night, February 19, 2015
A woman walking along Route 29 was killed when she was hit and killed by a car Thursday night, officials said.
The accident happened about 6 p.m. near the Middle Falls Fire Department's station.
Washington County Sheriff Jeff Murphy said the woman was walking along the road when hit, and was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name was not being released later Thursday night pending notification of next of kin, the sheriff said.
He said it did not appear there was any criminal wrongdoing on the part of the driver. The pedestrian appears to have been in the driving lane, the sheriff said.
Murphy said Bingo games were being held at the fire station, but it was unclear if that is where the woman was headed.
The investigation was being conducted by sheriff's investigators and deputies.
Vehicle and pedestrian traffic was directed away from the scene, as the unidentified victim remained covered by a tarp in the parking area across Route 29 from the fire station.
Route 29 was closed in the area for nearly 4.5 hours, but it was open as of early Friday.
