Lexington, KY : Baltimore Woman Cycling Cross-Country To Benefit Cancer Killed By Truck on June 13th 2014

A bicyclist riding across the country to raise money for cancer research died late Friday when she was hit by a vehicle while changing a tire on the side of the road in rural Kentucky.
Jamie Roberts was struck in Scott County outside of Lexington, according to a statement from the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults, based in Baltimore and Columbia. She was riding as part of the nonprofit's "4K for Cancer," a group of college students who are traveling cross-country from Baltimore to Portland over more than two months to fundraise and promote cancer awareness.
"Jamie's selflessness, her commitment to serving others and her deep devotion to her friends, family and fellow riders was apparent to everyone who knew her," said Ulman Cancer Fund CEO Brock Yetso in the statement.
A second rider sustained non-life threatening injuries, the statement said.
Roberts is a graduate of St. Mary's College of Maryland and according to a bio on the school's website, her hometown is Rockville. Her profile on the 4K for Cancer website describes her as a "retired" college athlete who was dedicating her ride to "a teammate of mine from St. Mary's whose life has been drastically affected by cancer in the past three years."
The Ulman Cancer Fund said it will provide assistance to riders who decide to come home and that all riders will take two days off to honor Roberts.
