Crystal Lake,IL : Riley School District 18 raises more than $3,500 for Marengo family after fatal crash on January, Monday 29th 2018

Riley School District 18 raised more than $3,500 in support of a Marengo family after a car crash killed Jose Rodriguez and left his wife and two daughters with serious injuries.

District staff organized the event after brainstorming a way to help the Rodriguez family, said Connie Marsh, a physical education teacher with the district.

“Two of the girls in the accident were our students, and we wanted to do something,” she said. “It was a quick, spur-of-the-moment idea.”

More than 200 participants showed up Friday for the Riley Runners Rodriguez run, which was open to the community, Marsh said.

The community has rallied around the family in the aftermath of the crash, which occurred Jan. 14 on Route 47 in Hebron.

The crash killed Rodriguez as well as Hebron resident Falynn M. Hironimus, 29.

A Facebook group named “Rodriguez Strong,” where the family posts updates, has amassed about 700 followers, and a GoFundMe account has collected about $15,000 for the family.

Marengo High School’s boys basketball team also hosted a fundraiser.

“Thank you for all of the love and support that we received during the wake and funeral,” Rodriguez’s wife, Delia Rodriguez, wrote in a recent post. “It was an amazing outpouring of support. From the bottom of our hearts. Thank you. We feel so blessed.”
