Bridgeport, CT : Stratford man gets settlement in crosswalk crash on Monday, January, 15th 2018
A Stratford man, who suffered multiple injuries when he was struck by a car driven by a Stamford woman while he was in a crosswalk on Bridgeport’s East Side, has received a $100,000 settlement.
John Maher, of Jackson Street, received the settlement of his lawsuit against Christine Carey as the case was being prepared for trial in Superior Court here.
“I am pleased we were able to resolve the case in a manner which provides Mr. Maher with the compensation he deserved,” said his lawyer Thomas Ganim. “Crosswalks were created for a very specific purpose to protect pedestrians and motorists must be mindful of the rights of pedestrians and use extreme caution approaching crosswalks.”
Shortly after 7 p.m. on Sept. 9, 2015, the 48-year-old Maher was walking on Central Avenue near the intersection of Barnum Avenue in a designated crosswalk when he was struck by a car being driven by the 74-year-old Carey, according to police report.
Carey, of Sylvan Knoll Road, told officers she “felt a huge thump on her car and looked back and observed Mr. Maher on the ground,” the police report states.
She was subsequently charged with failure to grant the right of way to a pedestrian at a crosswalk.
Ganim said Maher suffered injuries to his right hip and right leg that required medical care and rehabilitation leading to significant bills and expenses. The victim also has permanent decreased mobility, Ganim said.
