An all-terrain vehicle driver in Clarke County has died from injuries sustained in a Wednesday crash, according to Virginia State Police.

Robert Clayton Shepherd, 56, of Bluemont, was traveling north on Frogtown Road on a 2001 Honda ATV, a quarter-mile north of Mount Carmel Road, at about 7:10 p.m. Wednesday, according to state police spokesman Sgt. F.L. “Les” Tyler. The crash occurred as Shepherd attempted to pass a northbound vehicle by driving on the shoulder of the road.

Shepherd, who wasn’t wearing a helmet, which state law requires, lost control and was thrown from the ATV. He was later pronounced dead at Inova Fairfax Hospital, Tyler said.

Shepherd was riding on a public road, which is illegal in Virginia unless authorized by authorities.

ATV crashes killed 349 people nationally last year, according to the Consumer Federation of America.

Shepherd was a husband and father of five children, according to an obituary from Enders & Shirley Funeral Home. He had five stepchildren and 10 stepgrandchildren. He worked as a heavy equipment operator.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville.
