Hammond, IN : One person killed in a traffic crash near the Illinois-Indiana state line early Saturday, February 13, 2016

A person was killed in a traffic crash early Saturday on the Indiana Toll Road near the Illinois-Indiana state line, authorities said.

About 3:33 a.m., a maroon 2010 Nissan Maxima was traveling east on Interstate 90 about 2 miles east of the West Point Toll Plaza when it rear-ended a 2012 Peterbilt semitrailer truck, according to a news release from Indiana State Police, citing a witness report.

The Nissan hit the semi's empty flatbed after cutting in front of another semi. Both semis pulled over to the inner shoulder, but the Nissan could not move and was stopped in the road, according to the release.

The driver of the Nissan got out of the car and almost got hit by a passing vehicle. One of the semi drivers told the Nissan driver to get away from the road, and they began to argue, the release said.

A short time later, a silver 2010 Dodge Charger hit the Nissan and its driver.

The Nissan's driver, described only as a male, was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:55 a.m., according to the Lake County, Ind., coroner's office. His name is being withheld pending notification of the family, the release said.

A 28-year-old woman behind the wheel of the Dodge was taken to Franciscan St. Margaret Health in Hammond with injuries that weren't life-threatening, according to the release.

Officials closed all eastbound lanes into the Indiana Toll Road from the Chicago Skyway for investigation early Saturday. The road was reopened as of 7:30 a.m., authorities said.
