Burlington,VT : February begins with fatal car crash in Pownal on February, Thursday 1st 2018

Vermont State Police responded to a morning crash on Thursday that took the life of one driver and blocked traffic on U.S. 7 in Pownal near the intersection of Peaks Pine Road for over two hours.

Robert Dross, 21, of Pownal, was unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene by the rescue team, according to the police statement.

Gregory Brown, 33, of Danby, was transported to Albany Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries for further evaluation, police said.

Dross was traveling north on U.S. 7, while Brown was traveling south, according to the police. Dross in his Volkswagen Jetta traveled left of the center line and continued north in the southbound lane. Dross's Jetta then collided with Brown's Subaru outback. Both cars were totaled, the police statement said.

A preliminary investigation showed that speed was considered to have contributed to the crash. Alcohol and drugs were not thought to be a factor, according to police.

The crash was still under investigation on Thursday afternoon. Dross was transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington for an autopsy, to determine the exact cause of death.

State police were assisted on the scene by Pownal Town Fire Department, Bennington Fire Department, Bennington Rescue and the Bennington County Sheriff’s Department.
