Athens, AL : Andres Ramos, 14, dies after being ejected from vehicle in crash into tree off of Easter Ferry Road near Athens on Thursday, Aug 6, 2015
West Limestone High student Andres Vicente died Friday from injuries he suffered after a single-vehicle crash Thursday.
Trooper Curtis Summerville said Vicente, who was 14, was a passenger in a 1999 Mercury. Vicente was injured after the vehicle left Easter Ferry Road, 10 miles east of Athens, and struck a tree at 3:30 p.m. He was not wearing a seat belt.
The teen was transported to University of Alabama at Birmingham Children’s Hospital for treatment. He died 4 p.m. Friday, said Limestone County Superintendent Tom Sisk.
The driver, who is 16, and another teenage passenger were taken to area hospitals for treatment, where they remain. Summerville said Alabama State Troopers are still investigating the wreck.
Sisk said Vicente was a member of the varsity soccer team, which will be hosting a memorial service at 2 p.m. today at the school’s football field. Sisk said the community is encouraged to bring white and blue balloons, which will be released during the ceremony.
Extra counselors will be at the school Monday to be there for the students, Sisk said.
“We want to extend our sympathy to the family,” he said. “It’s truly a tragedy.”
