Spartanburg County ,NC : 44-year-old moped driver thrown off overpass in crash on Tuesday ,August 18th 2015

A moped driver was thrown over the side of an overpass in Spartanburg County during a crash on Tuesday, according to witnesses.

The Spartanburg County coroner said Brenton David Cook, 44, of Campobello, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The collision was reported at 10:22 a.m. on California Avenue where it crosses Interstate 585.

Mike McCormick that he was driving behind the man on the moped when he saw the bike start to shimmy. The moped then crossed over the oncoming lanes and crashed into the wall, sending the driver over the side of the overpass.

Another witness said the moped driver was going 20 or 30 mph.

"He started swerving. He swerved to the right," Ashley Bailey said. "He ended up hitting the wall. When he hit the wall, I saw his body go over the wall. He fell down below. The bike went one way and he went the other."

The South Carolina Highway Patrol confirmed the witness accounts, saying the moped driver was traveling west on California Avenue and crossed the centerline, hit the bridge and was thrown over the side.

"Devastating. Devastating. You just never know. You just never know. My condolences to him and his family. God bless him," said Katrina Walker, who drove by the man's body on the side of I-585.

The SCHP said the driver was not wearing a helmet and was pronounced dead at the scene.

"If the impact alone didn't kill him I knew a car would. They weren't going to expect a man falling out of the sky," Bailey said.

Troopers said it was unclear what caused the man to hit the side of the overpass.

"I feel terrible for his family. I know he's got somebody out there that cares about him," Bailey said.
