ANDERSON COUNTY, SC : A vehicle was involved in a crash on Sunday, July 23, 2017
A deputy in pursuit of a vehicle was involved in a crash Sunday night in which an Upstate college student was killed, officials with the Anderson County Sheriff's Office said.
The cruiser crashed into a car driven by Joshua Caleb Martin, 22, of Piedmont, Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore said. The South Carolina Highway Patrol said the deputy's car struck Martin's car on the passenger's side, pinning him inside.
Shore said Martin was a Wren High School graduate and was attending Greenville Tech.
Shore told WYFF News 4 that Martin had just left a nearby church after a meeting with the preacher.
Martin's mother, Teresa Bowen, said on Monday, "Josh was loved by everyone who knew him. It’s just a huge shock, but the cool thing is that he’s now where he wants to be. He was not meant for this world. He was a dreamer and a free spirit and he’s right where he wants to be and he’s not worried about us. For him, this time on Earth was just a formality to get to where he now is."
According to investigators, the crash happened at the intersection of Highway 8 and Moore Road.
Capt. Darrell Hill told WYFF News 4's photographer at the scene the crash happened shortly after a chase started.
Hill said deputies were called Sunday night to the 7-11 convenience store on Highway 8 when someone reported seeing a stolen car.
When deputies arrived at the store, they attempted to stop the car but it drove off beginning the chase, Hill said.
Hill said when the chase reached the intersection of Highway 8 and Moore Road, the deputy's cruiser collided with another car that was not involved with the pursuit.
