54-year-old Donald Carpenter of Titusville was killed early Wednesday in a Volusia County crash, authorities said.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Carpenter, who drove a 1993 Nissan sedan, was declared dead at the scene of the crash after authorities were called to U.S. 1 and Cedar Grove Road to investigate the incident. The vehicle was located around 8 a.m. and Brevard County Fire Rescue crews were called out to assist with cutting the mangled vehicle open to retrieve the victim.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers said the car was traveling south on U.S. 1 when it ran off the road and struck a culvert on the shoulder of the roadway before slamming into several nearby trees. The FHP said Carpenter was not wearing a seat belt.
An autopsy was expected to include blood tests that would review how much, if any, alcohol or other medical conditions played a role in the crash. His identity is being withheld pending next of kin notification.
The crash remains under investigation.
