Silver Spring, MD : 77-year-old Silver Spring man struck and killed walking to McDonald’s, crossing New Hampshire Avenue near Randolph Road on Tuesday morning, November 4, 2014
A 77-year-old Silver Spring man was struck and killed Tuesday morning.
Every morning for at least a decade, Tschimid “Jimmy” Moschkin walked to McDonald’s, crossing New Hampshire Avenue near Randolph Road. On Election Day, he didn’t make it.
“When I see the news, one person came into my mind—Jimmy—because I know he crosses at that time in the morning,” said friend Trevor McPherson. “So, I called him and he didn’t respond.”
McPherson had morning coffee with Jimmy just about every day.
“I cry this morning very, very hard,” he said. “I felt it.”
Moschkin spent his early years in a displaced persons camp in Europe. Eventually, he and his family made it to the U.S.
“One of my fears was he might get hit crossing the street, but he wanted to go; that was his crew up there in McDonald’s,” said his brother, Ben Moschkin.
Moschkin’s family says despite their fears, they couldn’t keep him from heading out.
“You don’t get enough time to cross that busy street,” said his sister-in-law, Lydia Moschkin. “I just hope he didn’t suffer.”
Moschkin passed away at the hospital soon after he was hit. So far, no charges have been filed against the 64-year-old driver who struck him, but Montgomery County Police say the case remains under investigation.
