Fort Collins mother, son killed in crash on November, Thursday 9th 2017

A Fort Collins mother and her teenage son were killed Thursday night in a two car crash on the northeast side of the city.

Kelly Cortez, 47, and Joshua Cortez, 17, were killed in a crash around 7:20 p.m. at the intersection of Richards Lake and Giddings roads, when the 1994 Honda Accord they were traveling in was struck.

A press release from Fort Collins police said an 18-year-old identified as Connor Givans was driving a 1985 Chevrolet Corvette east on Richards Lake Road and collided with the passenger side of the Honda, which was traveling south on Giddings Road.

The front passenger from each vehicle was ejected in the crash.

Givans was transported by ambulance to Poudre Valley Hospital, and his front seat passenger, David Muncy, 19, was airlifted to Medical Center of the Rockies.

Police are working to determine if speed was a factor in the crash. Alcohol is not currently believed to have contributed to the accident, the release said.

The intersection was closed for about eight hours while Fort Collins police investigated the crash.

The investigation is ongoing and charges in the incident are pending, the release said.

Anyone who has information about the incident who has not yet spoken to law enforcement is asked to contact Officer Tim Brennan at 970-416-2229.
