Loveland, CO : Sheriff's Office investigates Berthoud bike crash on Tuesday, 23rd August, 2016
A 14-year-old bicyclist has serious but non-life-threatening injuries after a reported crash Tuesday morning with a semi truck near 10th Street and Welch Avenue in Berthoud, according to the Larimer County Sheriff's Office.
Dispatch received a call about the crash at about 7:13 a.m., according to a Sheriff's Office news release, and deputies arrived about two minutes later.
The boy was transported to a hospital to receive treatment for his injuries.
According to an investigation by the Sheriff's Office Crash Team, a commercial truck with a trailer was driving west in the 900 block of the alley between Mountain and Welch Avenues, heading toward the 400 block of 10th Street, the release stated. The truck took a right turn onto 10th Street, heading northbound, and the bicyclist was heading southbound on the northbound side of the road.
The 14-year-old was reportedly distracted, according to the news release, and rode his bike into the trailer.
"The quick reaction of the truck driver to stop the vehicle mostly likely prevented the bicyclist's injuries from being more severe," according to the release from spokesman David Moore.
Deputies closed off 10th Street for about three hours during their investigation of the incident.
No charges have been filed against the bicyclist and it's not yet clear if they will be. The investigation is ongoing.
