MICHIGAN CITY, MI : MC woman, 34, killed in utility pole collision on Friday, January, 12th 2018
A Michigan City woman was killed Friday after her car collided with a utility pole and flipped onto its roof in the 1900 block of Springland Avenue in Michigan City.
Speeding and icy road conditions were considered contributing factors in the crash.
According to a press release from the Michigan City Police Department, officers were dispatched to the scene at 10:17 a.m. in reference to a personal injury automobile accident with entrapment. Upon arrival, officers located a heavily damaged vehicle resting on its roof along the south shoulder of the roadway.
Although several bystanders attempted to gain entry into the damaged vehicle to assist the female occupant, the vehicle was so severely damaged entry could not be made until members of the Michigan City Fire Department arrived with extrication equipment. The female occupant, who was later identified as Amanda Trampski, 34, of Michigan City, was then freed from the vehicle and transported to Franciscan Health-Michigan City where she was pronounced dead.
A preliminary investigation led by Lt. Jeff Loniewski of the Michigan City Police Department revealed that Trampski was traveling eastbound on Springland Avenue in her 1993 Chevy Malibu when she lost control of her vehicle on the snow and slush covered pavement. As the vehicle proceeded to slide off the south shoulder of the roadway it eventually collided with a NIPSCO utility pole, causing the vehicle to flip over onto its roof.
The collision caused the utility pole to break, damaging the overhead electric lines. NIPSCO crews were summoned to the scene, later estimating the repairs could take up to 6 hours. Springland Avenue between Roeske Avenue and Karwick Road was closed for several hours Friday while NIPSCO crews worked to replace the pole.
Officers believe speed and road conditions were both contributing factors in this collision.
