SALEM, WA : Five people were injured in a two-vehicle crash on April, Sunday 30th 2017

Five people were injured in a two-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon near Salem.

A 2009 Ford Edge was traveling east at 1:15 p.m. on 245th Street, when the driver, 89-year-old Charles Norberg, of Salem, failed to stop at the stop sign at the roadway's intersection with U.S. Highway 81, approximately eight miles north of Salem. Norberg then collided with a vehicle traveling south on the highway, according to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.

The 2006 GMC Yukon traveling on Highway 81 attempted to swerve to avoid Norberg, but was unsuccessful. The Yukon entered the east ditch and Norberg's vehicle entered the west ditch.

The 53-year-old male driver of the Yukon and a 22-year-old female passenger sustained serious, non-life threatening injuries and were taken by ambulance to an area hospital. A family member transported a 13-year-old female passenger and an 8-year-old passenger, whose gender was unavailable, to a hospital with minor injuries. A 12-year-old female passenger was not injured. All passengers of the Yukon were wearing seat belts.

Norberg, who was also wearing a seatbelt, was transported to an area hospital with serious, non-life threatening injuries.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating, and charges are pending against Norberg. Other responding agencies were the McCook County Sheriff's Office, Salem Ambulance, Miner County Ambulance and McCook Fire Rescue.
