Tazewell, TN : Two killed in Claiborne County crash on Monday, December 12, 2016
Two Claiborne County residents died shortly after midnight in a head-on crash on Highway 25-E in Tazewell, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
Trooper David Good identified the deceased as Gregory D. Smith, 47, and Kimberly L. Smith, 50.
The crash report does not specify their relationship.
The Smiths were not wearing seat belts, and a restraining device could have saved their lives, according to Good, who reported he does not believe alcohol or drugs were factors in the 12:11 a.m. fatal crash.
Possible charges are pending against the New Tazewell man who collided with the Smiths, 22-year-old John D. Bray.
Sunday evening, Bray remained hospitalized in a regular room at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
Mr. Smith, who was driving a 2000 Toyota, was northbound on Highway 25-E, negotiating a gentle right curve near the intersection with Tom Ball Road, prior to the crash, according to Good.
Bray, who also was unrestrained, was southbound.
His 2002 Chevrolet traveled across the northbound lanes and careened off a guardrail before striking the Smiths’ vehicle head-on, according to the crash report.
Funeral services for the Smiths had not been announced in Morristown by press time.
