Reading, PA : Berks man dies after crash on Route 61 near Hamburg on Tuesday night, October 18, 2016
A 22-year-old Mohrsville man died in Reading Hospital about three hours after he was injured when his motorcycle collided with a tractor-trailer Tuesday night on Route 61 near Hamburg, police said this morning.
The crash happened about 7:20 p.m. in the southbound lanes at the westbound ramp to Interstate 78, near the entrance to Cabela's in Tilden Township, police said.
The motorcyclist, Wayne M. Wetzel, was pronounced dead by a Reading Hospital physician at 10:40 p.m., officials said.
According to Tilden Township police:
Michael R. Kaiser, 35, of Reedy, W.Va., was driving northbound on Route 61 when he turned his tractor-trailer across the southbound lanes to enter the ramp for the interstate. Wetzel's motorcycle struck the rear of the trailer. Witnesses told investigators the motorcycle was traveling at a high rate of speed.
Wetzel, who was wearing a helmet, was taken to Reading Hospital in critical condition.
A southbound lane of Route 61 was closed at Cabela Drive for three hours while police conducted their investigation, and one northbound lane of Route 61 was closed briefly.
