Linton, IN : Pedestrian dies in Clay City accident on Monday, December 19th 2016
A man well-known in Greene County was killed in a traffic accident Monday evening.
Philip Dale Michael, 52, who lived with his sister in Clay City, was pronounced dead at St. Vincent Clay Hospital following a traffic accident shortly before 6:20 p.m., Monday, said Clay City Deputy Town Marshal Terry Silvers.
The Brazil Times reports Michael was pushing a shopping cart when a vehicle driven by Jayda Reed, 27, of Coal City, crested a hill and struck Michael at the intersection of White and Ninth streets in Clay City.
"It couldn't be helped," Silvers said.
Michael could often be seen pushing a shopping cart filled with items he collected.
He was known as "The Can Man" and "Bingo" to those in Greene and Clay Counties.
"The Can Man" nickname came from his habit of collecting cans. Various businesses would give him food and coffee in exchange for taking out their trash, Silvers said.
Another person who remembers Michael said he was called "Bingo" because that was how he would often greet people.
Funeral arrangements were not yet complete Tuesday morning.
