Fort Collins, CO : 1 dead in Poudre Canyon crash on Friday, March 24, 2017

A person was killed after plunging off of Colorado Highway 14 and landing upside down in the Poudre River near Rustic.

A passerby reported around 9 a.m. Friday that a vehicle, which appeared to be heading eastbound, was overturned in the Poudre River at mile marker 90, about 30 miles west of Colorado 14's intersection with U.S. Highway 287, according to Colorado State Patrol. No one witnessed the crash and it is unknown if the crash occurred Thursday night or Friday morning.

The body was found lying several feet from the late model Ford Taurus, which plunged about 20 feet down to the river. It is unknown if the person was ejected or if the person was able to get out of the vehicle then died. The river is running low and the vehicle was found in water near the bank in water several inches deep. There were no other occupants in the vehicle.

There is a house about 100 yards from the vehicle across the river but according to responders the people were not home at the time of the crash.

CSP said it was still investigating the crash late Friday afternoon. The body was taken to the Larimer County Coroner's Office and the person has not yet been identified.

Colorado Highway 14 remained open during the recovery of the body and vehicle from the river that lasted into the afternoon.

It was the fifth fatality on Larimer County Roads this year.
