Washington Township, MI : 70-year-old wrong-way driver dies in crash in Macomb County on Wednesday, June 29, 2016

Authorities say a 70-year-old woman who was driving the wrong way on a suburban Detroit roadway has died after a head-on crash.

The Macomb County sheriff’s department says Maria Pierce of Shelby Township was heading southbound in the northbound lanes of Michigan highway 53 in Washington Township around 12:20 a.m. Wednesday when her car collided with a northbound car.

The department says a 52-year-old Port Austin man who was driving the northbound car was trapped inside and taken to a hospital for treatment after being freed by rescuers.

The crash is under investigation. Investigators are seeking witnesses.
