Greenwood, SC : Johnston police officer dies after wreck in Edgefield County on Saturday, December, 9th 2017

An officer with the Johnston Police Department died Saturday night after his vehicle went off the left side of Highway 23 and struck a tree, according to the state Highway Patrol.

The Edgefield County Coroner’s Office confirmed the person who died was James Eric Chapman, 30, of Saluda.

According to Cpl. Bill Rhyne with the Highway Patrol, Chapman’s Ford Explorer was traveling south along S.C. Highway 23 when it ran off the left side of the road near JET Middle School at about 10:15 p.m. Friday.

Rhyne said the vehicle rolled over and ejected the man before he was taken to a hospital. It was unknown whether Chapman was wearing a seatbelt.

The coroner’s office said Chapman died at 11:48 p.m. at the Augusta University Medical Center from a head injury.

“The Edgefield County Law Officers Association would like to ask everyone to keep Cpl. Eric Chapman and his family in your prayers through this difficult time,” said a post from the association’s Facebook page.
