Fort Myers, FL : Lehigh Acres man critical after a crash on Tuesday morning, January 3, 2017

A Lehigh Acres man is in critical condition after his van failed to stop at an intersection and crashed into the side of a Mack truck Tuesday mid-morning.

A report from the Florida Highway Patrol said that Santiago Valdes-Martinez, 62, was driving a 2002 Chevy Astro van north of Williams Road and approaching a stop sign at West 6th Street.

A 2002 Mack Vision semi was stopped on the westbound stop sign on West 6th. When the Mack driver proceeded to make a left turn onto Williams, Valdes-Martinez drove through the stop sign on Williams and struck the left side of the truck.

The truck driver was not hurt.

Valdes-Martinez was taken to Lee Memorial in critical condition.

The FHP said charges are pending and that neither driver was wearing a seat belt.
