Hyde Park, UT : Idaho couple dies in multi-vehicle crash on icy U.S. 91 in Utah on Thursday, February 23, 2017
A five-vehicle crash on icy U.S. 91 in Hyde Park killed an Idaho couple and injured several other people.
North Park police dispatchers confirmed the accident occurred about 7:20 a.m. Thursday and resulted in all lanes of the highway being closed down until just after noon.
The deceased were identified as Robert Haworth, 85, and Henriette Haworth, 78.
Investigators said the chain-reaction crash began with a southbound vehicle going out of control on the slippery roadway, near 3120 North, while trying to avoid a perceived lane change by another vehicle.
The car spun out of control and hit a northbound Logan City garbage truck, police said. One other southbound car also hit the garbage truck.
The Haworths were southbound when, while apparently trying to avoid the accident, their car ended up stopped sideways in the southbound lanes, where it was hit by a southbound pickup truck.
The pickup was then hit by the garbage truck as it crossed the southbound lanes and eventually hit a power transformer on the west side of the highway, police said.
