Cambridge, MA : Family helps rescue driver after SUV goes into Charles River on Friday morning, August 29, 2014

Two people were rescued when their car went crashing into the Charles River along Memorial Drive in Cambridge. Police say the car crossed a busy jogging path, went down an embankment then ended up in the river Friday morning, all without hitting a single person. The car was traveling eastbound when it went up to the sidewalk and down a small embankment, into the river. The driver told 7News that there was a car in front of him that stopped suddenly, so he slammed on his brakes and swerved. The driver and passenger were able to get out of the car and thanks to some nearby boaters were able to get to land. “We heard a huge crash and then see this big SUV careen fast into river," Erica Eckman, one of the boaters, said. Eckman was with her family in a canoe for the first time Tuesday when they witnessed the crash. They say their biggest concern was their 7-year-old son in the boat. "This is a day my son never forget, that's for sure. To be able to be of service and to be able to help, that's awesome," Jeff Eckman said. The driver said he was lucky to be alive and thankful his car didn't hit any of the boaters.
