Harlingen, TX : Three-vehicle accident on Monday, August 21, 2017
Brownsville police say the victims killed in a three-vehicle accident Monday on the northbound Frontage Road were father and daughter.
They have been identified as Santiago Zarate, 84, of San Benito, and Maria del Carmen Mares, 59, of Harlingen
The accident happened about 2:20 p.m. Monday on the 2500 block of northbound Frontage Road.
Police said a white Ford Expedition was towing a red Ford Focus on the Frontage Road when a rope used to tow the Ford Focus snapped causing the vehicles to stop in the left lane of the Frontage Road.
Zarate and Mares both got out of their vehicles to try and reconnect the rope. It was at this time a third vehicle – that was also traveling on the northbound Frontage Road – turned onto the left lane in an attempt to try and merge into the expressway, police said.
According to police, the driver of the truck said he did not see the two vehicles until it was too late. The driver said although he tried to avoid striking the vehicles, his truck ended up colliding with the other vehicles.
Zarate and Mares became pinned between the vehicles and died from their injuries. The two were pronounced dead at the scene by Cameron County Justice of the Peace Pct. 2 Linda Salazar who ordered autopsies on Zarate and Mares.
Police say the driver of the truck has not been charged and the case will be referred to the Cameron County District Attorney's office to decide if any charges will be filed. The accident remains under investigation.
