RIO OSO, CA : Two dead, Chicoan in hospital after head-on crash on Highway 70 on Monday, 12th August 2019
A head-on collision Friday on Highway 70 in southern Sutter County left two people dead and a Chico woman hospitalized with major injuries.
According to a release from the Yuba-Sutter Office of the California Highway Patrol, the accident happened at 12:32 p.m. at Kempton Road and Highway 70.
The CHP said the 32-year-old Chico woman was westbound on Kempton, and turned her 2011 Honda Civic south onto Highway 70. However instead of crossing the median to the southbound lanes, she turned into the left-hand northbound lane.
That lane was occupied by a 2001 Honda Civic driven by a 76-year-old man with a 70-year-old woman, both from Plumas Lake.
Both drivers steered into the median simultaneously to avoid the collision, but crashed there.
The Plumas Lake couple were declared dead at the scene. The Chico woman was transported to UC Davis Medical Center. Names were not immediately available.
The crash remains under investigation.
