NILES, IL : Niles man killed in crash on Wednesday, February 1st 2017
A Niles man was killed in a two-vehicle crash northeast of town on Wednesday evening.
According to a report from the Niles post of the Michigan State Police, troopers were called to the area of Barron Lake Road and Cook Street around 7 p.m. Wednesday on report of a two-vehicle crash.
Troopers said a vehicle driven by Chad Pond, 29, of Niles, was traveling at a high rate of speed south on Barron Lake Road. As the vehicle attempted to pass another vehicle, Pond's vehicle struck the other vehicle, causing him to lose control. Troopers said Pond's vehicle ran off the road and overturned.
Pond was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to troopers, Pond was wearing a seat belt.
The crash remains under investigation.
