Salem, OR : A 63-year-old man died after being hit by a car while crossing South Central Avenue on Tuesday, 2nd January 2018
A 63-year-old man died after being hit by a car while crossing South Central Avenue on foot early Tuesday, authorities said.
The victim, identified as Richard Bengston, was hit about 7:27 a.m. between East 12th and East 13th streets and he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Medford Police Department.
Witnesses told police that Bengston was crossing South Central Avenue when he was struck by a southbound 2011 Honda CRV driven by a 25-year-old Central Point man, said police, who did not identify the driver.
The driver was cooperating with law enforcement, and investigators do not believe driver impairment contributed to the crash, police said. No arrests were made and the case will be forwarded to the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office for review, police said.
The Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction team arrived to investigate using a FARO scanner, Medford police Lt. Kerry Curtis said. The device makes full scans of crime and accident scenes and creates a three-dimensional digital rendering police can refer to. South Central Avenue was closed at East 12th Street while officers worked the scene. Traffic was detoured onto South Front Street or South Riverside Avenue.
