Phoenix , AZ : One person was killed after a car smashed into a care facility near 35th Avenue and Deer Valley on Sunday Night, 16th November 2014
One person was killed after a car smashed into a care facility near 35th Avenue and Deer Valley. To make matters worse, police believe the driver may have done it on purpose.
Police say the car slammed right into the home, through the living room and all the way to the kitchen on Sunday night.
Seven people were inside the home at the time because the home acts as a care facility for patients with traumatic brain injuries; five were patients and two employees.
Many of the patients are wheelchair bound.
Police say a 61-year-old man inside the care home was struck by the vehicle and taken to a hospital in critical condition. They say that man later died. His name hasn't been released.
According to police, the driver told them he crashed into the home on purpose to try to hurt himself.
"The driver indicated to our officer, at least the first statements he made to the officer, was that he had intentionally driven into this house. So, obviously we're going to look at impairment and determine if that played a factor, obviously look into aggravated assault charges, DUI, things of that nature, but again, we're in the preliminary stages of this investigation," said Phoenix Police Lt. Steve Martos.
The facility's owner says the patients were moved to another care facility for the time being.
They say he likely will face homicide and endangerment charges.
