MORROW, GA : A teenaged girl was killed and another was injured in a single-car crash on Monday, 26th March 2018
A teenaged girl was killed and another was injured in a single-car crash on the Interstate 75 exit ramp at Jonesboro Road in Morrow Monday morning.
The two high school students were traveling northbound in a Mini Cooper at about 11:40 a.m., attempting to navigate the curve of the exit 233 ramp, when they reportedly lost control of the vehicle. The girls were students at a private Christian school in Henry County.
The car flipped over before crashing into a tree in a nearby wooded area, said Sgt. Q. Lumpkin with the Morrow Police Department. The Georgia State Patrol Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is conducting a follow-up investigation, according to a GSP spokesman, and charges are pending.
The 17-year-old driver of the vehicle was assessed by medics with the Morrow Fire Department and transported to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment. The passenger of the vehicle was pronounced dead on scene.
She was identified by the state patrol as 18-year-old Makayla Penn of McDonough.
“I am very proud of the compassion shown by our officers today,” Morrow Police Chief Jimmy Callaway said in a post to the department’s Facebook page. “The parents of the victim of this crash actually came to the crash site. We had to make sure they did not go up to the car. Today I saw tough cops holding a devastated mother. Today I saw tough cops hugging a lost Father. Say a prayer for this family tonight and tell your kids you love them.”
According to Fox 5 Atlanta, the two were heading to Southlake Mall on their Senior Skip Day. Fox 5 has a news-sharing agreement with the Henry Herald.
