A North Providence man was killed after he drove his car the wrong way on Rte. 95 in Providence and crashed into a minivan, according to State Police.
On Saturday, at around 4:30 a.m., the Lincoln Woods Barracks began to receive cellular 911 calls reporting a car traveling south in the northbound lanes of Rte. 95 at the Providence Place Mall and alerted troopers in the area. A short time later, the Lincoln Woods Barracks began to receive additional calls reporting a serious, head-on crash involving the wrong-way driver and two other vehicles.
The initial accident investigation revealed that a car being driving by Armando Gomes, age 26, of 44 Hurdis St. in North Providence, entered Rte. 95 north the wrong way from the Exit 22C off-ramp. He proceeded south in the northbound lanes until about 200 feet before Exit 20, where he collided with the minivan head-on in the high speed lane and was killed. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the minivan was pulled from the wreckage by members of the Providence Fire and Rescue and transported to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries. A second vehicle was also struck by Gomes, but the occupants were not injured. The investigation to this point leads police to believe that the vehicle entered from Providence Place Way.
