Portage Township, MI : 40-year-old Laurium woman hospitalized in two-vehicle accident Wednesday morning, February 22, 2017

A two-vehicle accident Wednesday morning resulted in injuries for a 40-year-old Laurium woman, according to a written statement from the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office.

At about 8:15 a.m., a car northbound on M-26 about an eighth of a mile from Green Acres Road driven by the Laurium woman collided nearly head on with a semi-tractor trailer.

According to witnesses, the car crossed the center line and struck the truck.

There was a passenger in the back seat of the car, but that person was wearing a seatbelt and was uninjured.

The driver of the car had to be removed with the Hurontown Fire and Rescue jaws of life. Mercy Ambulance transported the car driver to UP Health System-Portage for treatment of her injuries.

The driver of the semi was uninjured.

Both vehicles received extensive damage and were towed from the scene. Both drivers were wearing seat belts at the time of the collision.

Also assisting at the scene were Michigan Technological University Police and Public Safety, the Houghton Police Department, Michigan State Police and Superior Service Towing. The accident is still under investigation.
