Crescent City, CA : A Klamath man died in a Eureka hospital following a fiery collision on Friday, 27th April 2018
Crescent City, California
A Klamath man died in a Eureka hospital Friday following a fiery collision on the Klamath River bridge that shut down U.S. 101 for about four hours.
Although authorities have not released the man's name pending notification of next of kin, he is approximately 37 years old, said California Highway Patrol Officer Brandy Gonzalez.
According to CHP Commander Larry Depee, the deceased was traveling south in a Nissan Maxima when it "somehow made contact" with a tractor trailer heading the opposite direction on the north side of the bridge at about 10:30 a.m. Authorities have not yet determined if the vehicles side-swiped each other or if the collision was head-on, Depee said. The cause of the collision is still under investigation, he said.
The collision caused the tractor trailer to catch fire, its tires and possibly its air tanks exploding, Depee said. The driver of the tractor trailer sustained minor injuries and was not transported to the hospital, he said. However the driver of the Nissan Maxima was transported with major injuries to St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka via Cal-Ore Life Flight, according to Depee.
