Dallas, TX : DPS: Wise County JP was wrong-way driver in fatal crash
Wise County Justice of the Peace Terri Johnson was driving the wrong way on Highway 287 Saturday evening when her car plowed into a sport utility vehicle, state troopers said.
Johnson and three other people were killed in the wreck just before 6 p.m.
Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Lonny Haschel said Johnson was driving a Volkswagen Passat going south in the northbound lanes of Highway 287 near County Road 4228, four miles south of Decatur.
"For an as yet undetermined reason, the Passat was traveling the wrong way on the roadway," Haschel said. "Our troopers are going to take a look at all the physical evidence left behind at the scene and interview the witnesses and try to make a determination as to what caused this crash."
Johnson was killed, as were three people in the SUV. A four-year-old girl in the SUV, a Chevrolet Trailblazer, was seriously injured and taken to Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth by helicopter ambulance.
The names of the other victims have not been released. They are believed to be from the Wichita Falls area.
Johnson has served as justice of the peace in Precinct 2 since 2007, and was unopposed in the most recent election. According to her official biography, she and her husband have two sons.
"[She was] a highly respected individual, and this is a terrible loss for the community," Haschel said. "Our prayers and thoughts go to the family."
