Manchester Township, MI : 50-year-old man involved in a one-car crash in Manchester Township on Tuesday evening, December 23, 2014
Police are still investigating an accident that killed a 50-year-old Saline man on Tuesday.
Hans Rehder was driving his 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix eastbound on Austin Road when he left the road, crashing into a utility pole. Huron Valley Ambulance transported him to the University of Michigan hospital where he later died of his injuries. No one else was in the vehicle at the time.
Manchester Fire Chief Mike Riesterer said the car went sideways into the pole, which caused it to enter the driver’s side of the car by about a foot. The impact also caused the pole to break in two different places.
Rescuers attempted to have a helicopter come to the scene but the flight had to be cancelled due to foggy conditions, which made it unsafe, he said.
Crews used the Jaws of Life to extricate Rehder.
Riesterer said the scene was dangerous because the wires from the pole ended up dangling over the scene of the accident.
“It was pretty scary moments there for a bit,” he said.
Rescuers were fearful if they moved the car it would cause the wires to fall to the ground. In that sort of situation, crews are trained to rapidly get the victim away from the scene to provide treatment, he said.
